Most interesting places for a military tour in Kiev

Ukrainian capital was one of the most important cities in the former Soviet Union and it has a lot of interesting military objects that are connected with the  World War II and the Cold War.

Here is a list of the most important places that are recommended for a military tour.

Kiev Museum of History of the Great Patriotic War and monumental statue Mother of the Fatherland monument.

Mother of the Fatherland monument ‘Rodina Mat’  is one of the highest objects in Kiev (62 meters/203 ft) and one of the highest sculptures in Europe. Monument was built to commemorate the Second World War. The memorial complex covers the area of 10 hectares, overlooking the Dnieper River. It contains the giant bowl “The Flame of Glory”, a site with the World War II military equipment, and the “Alley of the Hero Cities”.

Aviation Museum Training Hangar

The building of Aviation Training Hangar was built in 1980 and has a unique design with a stretched membrane of roof trusses. It took 2 more years to bring all the aircrafts and helicopters inside of the training hangar.

You can see a big collection of the Soviet aviation in this museum:

This museum can be called one of the most technically advanced museums in Kiev, as it doesn’t offer exhibits, but interactive displays aviation. This museum takes the 6th position in the list of World best aviation museums by CNN version.

Stalin’s Subway

Joseph Stalin gave an order to begin a construction of a top-secret project “Object #1” in 1938. The aim of this project was to connect both sides of Ukraine capital in case of a destruction of the bridges during possible military actions with help of two tunnels. The construction was stopped as unprofitable in 1949. The unfinished metro line could be an interesting attraction for military and digger enthusiasts.
